With the move to GP Commissioning of Services, the GP Practice will become responsible for Information Management. This will include becoming the Records Controller and Data Controller.
Data Protection has become a hot topic over the last 5 years with news stories constantly in the headlines about loss of records through Laptop’s, Memory Chips, CD/DVD’s being left in public places or stolen from homes and cars. There are many cases of data protection breaches listed on the ICO website that could have been easily avoided had best practice been in place. Further, had the organisations been certified to British Standards, their fines could have been much less in those cases where the actions of an individual could have been demonstrated as “maverick” rather than “systemic” to the organisation. The first fine handed out to an NHS PCT was £70,000 for sending information for a single patient to the wrong recipient. In the last few years, Local and National Government bodies have been paying fines in the range of £20,000 to £160,000 for DPA breaches with many decision notices to retrain large numbers of staff quickly. Any data sent to the wrong recipient is now unacceptable and incurs large fines, even if it is within the same organisation! Worried? If you are interested in these services, call today for an appointment. It could be the best value for money hour you will spend this year!
